Sleep Can Reduce Depression

Teens who slept through the night more prone to depression, compared to bed early

Recent research conducted in New York showed that bed early to protect the teenagers from depression and suicidal thoughts.

Of 15,500 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years who made the study materials, they are asleep before midnight, a 24% tendency to experience depression than those who slept until 22:00 hours.

And those who slept less than five hours a night have a 71 percent chance of depression, than those who slept for eight hours, according to Journal of Sleep (Sleep).

In the UK an estimated 80 thousand children and adolescents suffering from depression.

Researchers from Columbia University Medical Center in New York to collect power from 15,500 adolescents in the 1990s.

Risk of depression

Among those who have a high risk of depression, those who were ordered to bed by their parents or who sleep after midnight, 20% more likely to think of suicide than those who slept before 2200.

Those who slept less than five hours had 48% higher for suicide than those who slept for eight hours.

The teenagers who reported they were "enough sleep" 65% less likely to experience depression.

Depression and suicidal thinking is more common in girls, older teens, or those who have low self-perception.

Most parents in the study had set a deadline to bed at about 22:00 or earlier.

On average, the teens slept seven hours and 53 minutes each night, less than nine hours of recommendations for children their age.
